Khadidja Latreche

Holding a Woman International Master title, Khadidja Latreche is a female Algerian chess player. Starting chess at a very young age, inspired by the Polgar sisters, and moving on to winning many amazing achievements, Khadidja now provides great inspiration as a role model to thousands of young girls in the chess community, and all across the globe with her inspirational journey. 

Early Life/Introduction to Chess

Introduced to the game at the age of 5, Khadidja instantly exhibited a deep love and passion for chess. Her first introduction to chess occurred when her parents took her to a chess club with her sister. In a recent QU interview with Khadidja, she stated, "...we went for the chess club, and it was the best thing that happened to my life." Khadidja was always clear in her mind from a very young age that she wanted to continue with the game at a higher level. 

Growing up as 1 of 3 sisters, Khadidja looked up to the Polgar Sisters, and used their story as inspiration through her chess career.

Chess Career

Throughout her career, Khadidja Latreche has had an immense amount of success and accomplishments. She was the national champion in the u/14, u/16, u/18, and u/20 categories for her country, and was a member of the Algerian national team from 2007-2013. Khadidja was also a member of the Algerian Olympiad team in 2008, 2010, and 2012. She was a

a Bronze medalist at the 2010 Arab Championships, 2x Silver medalist at the 2011 All African Games, and a Gold medalist at the 2011 Arab Games. Khadidja's passion and drive is what allowed her to reach such high levels of success. She was fully dedicated to the game, often prioritizing chess above school, and constantly traveling to represent her country in tournaments. Now, with 10 years of coaching experience, Khadidja aims to share her love for the game with her students, and inspire more girls into the chess community. 

Khadidja's Advice

To all the chess players looking to improve their game, Khadidja stresses the importance of putting in consistent efforts on a daily basis. In a conversation with Khadidja, she stated, "...I think working not for just tournaments, working everyday, that's what will help." Khadidja emphasizes that there is no substitution for hard work, as that's the only way to consistently progress. She also notes the importance of not only prepping for tournaments mentally, but physically as well. Incorporating small exercises into your daily routine helps you maintain a healthy and energized body to keep you through long games, and avoid tiredness. 

 

Khadidja is an empowering female icon in the chess community, who serves as a reminder that with determination and hard work, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. In a male dominated environment, Khadidja lets her game speak for her, and is truly an inspiration!
